Spring has sprung in East Tennessee and the warm, dare I say hot, temperatures we are expecting this weekend are proof. The grass is getting greener and taller each day, the birds are happily chirping before the sun rises and soon the beloved dogwoods will be abloom in white and pink. Each year, right around the time the dogwoods begin to open their showy bracts, Knoxville announces the arrival of Spring by hosting the annual Dogwood Arts Festival. The Dogwood Arts Festival is a month-long series of events featuring art exhibits, entertainment and the famed Doogwood Trail. The Dogwood Trail takes folks on a driving tour that winds all over Knoxville and showcases gardens and neighborhoods with spectacular displays of dogwoods and other springtime flowers and trees. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Dogwood Arts Festival and the third year Sassy Glass Studio has exhibited at the Market Square Art Fair. The Market Square Art Fair takes place Friday, April 9th through Sunday, April 11th and features many talented artists from Knoxville and the surrounding area. Rounding out the activities at the Art Fair is non-stop entertainment and the best place to find a funnel cake, sausage sub or homemade ice cream.
Mark your calendar for the Art Fair and be sure to drop by and visit Sassy Glass Studio on the North side of Krutch Park extension located between Krutch Park and Gay Street. I have been busy creating limited edition dogwood themed fused glass goodness which will be available only at the Art Fair.

While you are marking your calendar, you will want to add the Dogwood Art DeTour on April 24th and 25th. Sassy Glass Studio will be participating along with many other artists in the Knoxville area for self-guided tours of our studios allowing folks to get a behind-the-scenes look of us at work and the purchase art along the way. This is the first year we've participated in the DeTour and we are really excited to be a part of it. Here are directions to the studio.

Student's first project : Set of four fused glass coasters of their own design. Students choose the colors and placement of the glass for their coasters. You can get as creative as your heart desires!
Student's second project : Sun catcher (or nightlight or pendants, your choice) featuring the student's impression the mountain, meadow and river scene shown in the first image. It's really easy to get creative with your second project. Experiment with different forms of glass such as frit and perhaps try another fusing technique, like dimensional.
