It's gonna be a Sassy new year!

Happy Sassy New Year!

Over the last year, I spend  lot of time focusing on my photography business, ALM Photo {no pun intended} and not on Sassy Glass Studio. There is no real reason why this happened, except that my husband and I work together in ALM Photo and if he was heading to the office, I would go along with him without considering whether I needed to spend time in the glass studio. I spent very little time creating new art in 2012 and my Etsy shop was nearly bare. If I was out in the glass studio, I was creating new pieces just to have something to sell at the Market Square Farmers' Market which runs each Saturday starting in May until the end of December.

Toward the end of 2012, I started paying attention to how I was using my time between both of my businesses, my personal life and taking time away from work to relax and renew. I didn't like what I saw. Too much time in the office, not enough time working in my businesses, too much time working on them and too much time doing what other people wanted me to do. I started making notes, both written and mental, on these observations and decided there had to be a change.

Starting with this blog post, you can expect to see more frequent posts about Sassy Glass Studio, about me, about what I am creating, about where you can find my work, about where I am working on getting my work into and maybe even about my pets. My point is, you will be more from me. And I hope you like it. Life is too short not to wake up every day and do what I love. I love photography and fused glass art and I've decided one isn't going to get more attention that the other.

Just in time for the Holidays!

A couple of weeks ago I was chatting with one of my Market Square Farmers' Market neighbor vendors  and somehow the conversation came around to dry erase boards. I honestly don't know how it did, but I decided I would create some boards and bring them to the Market. I made five different designs and color combinations and they made their debut at the Farmers' Market this past Saturday.

I am pretty jazzed about the whole dry erase board idea and can't wait to create some more. They are about 6 inches wide by 8 inches tall and feature two stainless steel loops at the top for hanging. I added a ribbon hanger to each one, but you could easily swap it out for something more appropriate for your decor.

The 6 x 8 dry erase boards are $35 each and you can find them in the Sassy Glass Studio Etsy shop or at the Market Square Holiday Market on December 1, 8, 15 and 22 from noon until 7pm. Custom created boards are also available, so let me know if you want a particular color combination. Or you can add full color photos to your board for an additional cost. These are a great gift idea and I can't believe I didn't think to make them sooner!

These are roles I never thought I would fill when I was learning about fused glass nearly five years ago, but here I am, filling them right up!

I love teaching people how to create their own fused glass art, answering their questions about kilns when they have as one student said "become addicted to fused glass", and encouraging students to experiment with techniques, colors and designs. The first time someone asked me if I am concerned about my students becoming my competition I was taken aback. Why would I be upset if one of my students was so inspired by my work and my instruction to start creating their own art and sell it?

One of my recent students, Kim Currin, found me while searching for information about flattening bottles. Kim has been creating glasses and vases by cutting down bottles for quite a while, but she wanted to do something different with them. Somehow Kim managed to find me through a Google search and we started talking about glass and next thing I know Kim's signed up for Beginner Fused Glass Class. She was an excellent student, creating gorgeous colorful pieces in thoughtful designs and I just knew the next time I heard from her it would be to let me know she bought a kiln. I was so right!

Several months have passed since Kim last graced my studio with her creativity and she now has her own creative space in Cleveland, TN to focus on her slumped bottle pieces and fused glass coasters, nightlights, plates, platters and more. Kim also has an Etsy shop and Facebook page. Take a look at what she's working on at Kim Currin Creations and give her some love. I do believe I have taught her well!

I am so proud of each and every one of my students and there is nothing I want more than for them to be successful whether they just take the classes for fun to learn a new craft or if they jump right in with both feet and start a business. My students inspire me and often give me fresh ideas for my own work. Many of them have become friends. So, just as I was finishing up this post guess who calls me? Kim! She had a question for me. I was thrilled to hear from her and she made my day when she told me she talks about me every day and that she's happy I am her mentor. Do I have the best students or what?! They are always teaching me something.

Market Square Farmers' Market begins this week | Sassy Glass Studio

It seems like my fellow Market Square Farmers' Market vendors and I were just lamenting about how we wouldn't see one another for 4 whole months and now it's May and time for the Market to begin for it's ninth season. If you live in Knoxville and the surrounding area, I personally invite you to come out for the opening Market to see all the amazing produce, meat, prepared food, and multitude of tasty treats, not to mention all of the great handcrafted items created by local artists and craftspeople. The Market runs from 9am and 2pm each Saturday through Thanksgiving and then again the Saturday's before Christmas for the Holiday Market. I will be dedicating a post each week to a fellow Market vendors starting next week. Many of the vendors are my fellow members of the Knoxville Creative Hands Street Team who I hope you will seek out and support.
